TO : MR. SANDMAN

.

.

I would like to lodge a complaint

To whoever programs my dreams

That my dreams are not at all

What I ordered

The dreams I wanted were exciting adventures

Delightful company, exotic locations

Luxury and a great story with a happy ending

However

The dreams I got were frustrating, problematic

Ominous, confusing, inconclusive

Fragments of weird events, even scares

Please fix this immediately

Or you will hear from The Creature Under the Bed

Who happens to also be an attorney

About my rights being violated by obnoxious content

And my peaceful enjoyment of sleep being disturbed

By nonsense.

SAWDUST

SAWDUST

.

.

You wouldn't let termites destroy your house

Chewing and tunneling away

Until the whole thing falls down

Well, regrets are the termites of the emotional world

They gnaw and nibble away at the very beams that hold up your house

Your self-esteem and joy of living life

How do you know if you are being diminished by regrets?

Observe your thoughts for little piles of sawdust

Composed of self-doubt, misery over the past, resentments

And feeling like part of your life was wasted

(Wasting your life on regretting wasting your life

Is a waste of life)

These are clear signs you have regrets

You can eradicate these regrets by concentrating on the Now

Forgiving yourself for being young, inexperienced, and naive

Put the valuable lesson in your Wisdom file

A file that consists of a costly compilation of lessons

We have paid for in full with our time and essence

We may not have profited in the way we hoped

We only profited by learning something very important

Regrets can appear at any time, to anyone

Spray them with acceptance and self-forgiveness

Seal it shut, secure in the knowledge you will not make that mistake

Ever ever again.

THE LARGER ISSUE

THE LARGER ISSUE

.

.

Even if the Belligerent will not listen to us

We can listen politely to them

Even if the Belligerent will not behave respectfully towards us

We can behave respectfully towards them

Even if the Belligerent can not budge an inch towards considering

The merit of our position

We can decide not to shove them rudely out of the way

Because bigger than the issue at hand

Is the much more compelling issue of our humanity

Your humanity and mine

And the Standards of Conduct you and I hold ourselves to

Politeness, respect, non-violence

Will not solve all our current problems

But in the rarified air of political negotiations

Respect, politeness and non - violence

Will at least allow us to address the issues

In a sane and reasonable way.

ANTI-SNIPER LAW

ANTI - SNIPER LAW

When reading a contract

Start with the small print

While your mind is still fresh and sharp

That way you stand the best chance

To spot the deal-killers

ONCE UPON A TIME

 .

.

.

ONCE UPON A TIME

.

.

When I lived in my old house

I loved that house

It was the hub of all my activities

Now I live in a new house

I love this house

It is the hub of all my activities

I seldom think about my old house

Or speculate about who lives there

This made me wonder if this is what reincarnation is like

(If reincarnation is really an option)

I am completely invested in this body, in this life

But previously was I completely invested in a different body?

I am not sad about being in a new house

I have simply moved on

If you went to my old house and asked for me

They would say, "She's not here."

Perhaps they would not even know

That I was a person who once lived there

But here or there, I am still the same person

And yet not the same person

At all

UNION NOW AND FOREVER

UNION NOW AND FOREVER

.

.

Lincoln, Grant and Sherman

Walk with me every day

Their strengths and strategies

Help me determine my way

.

.

None of them was perfect

They all had human flaws

Doing the very best they could

For a true and noble cause

.

.

Lincoln, Grant and Sherman

Give me a battle plan

To fight the powers of disunion

That threaten this precious land

ARTISTS IN WAR

 .

.

.

Poem I wrote

.

.

ARTISTS IN WAR

.

.

When Washington crossed the Delaware

At night, on December 25, 1776

Both shores were illuminated with large fires

A hellish scene in a hellish war

As all wars are hellish

.

.

At three, the afternoon before the crossing began,

Washington's rear guard left Princeton

Leaving the excellent Princeton library unguarded

At four in the afternoon Cornwallis's infantry

Spoiled and plundered the magnificent library

As all wars spoil and plunder

.

.

It took Washington five days to get the guns, supplies and wagons

Across the river. Day and night they crossed

By the light of the sun or the large fires on the shores

Washington tried to guard all the major crossing points

Along the twenty-five miles of the Pennsylvania side

Of the Delaware.

.

.

But to defend everything is to defend nothing

However, Washington had other strengths

He could hide his boats and troops

Some boats, carrying large weapons, were painted black

And flew a Pennsylvania Navy flag sewn by Betsy Ross

As all wars must have flags and weapons

.

.

Artists painted these scenes, writers documented the struggle

One writer, Thomas Paine, wrote words that inspired rebellion

Scribbling by firelight, despite the panic and crisis

His words were like a drumbeat, a heartbeat, a call to arms

As all wars must have those who take up arms

.

.

Paine stirred the hearts and minds of those that read his pamphlets

In December 1776 writers, artists, a seamstress

Illustrated, inspired and defined the war

And perhaps helped determine the outcome.

They changed the course of history for all time.
