WHEN SOMEONE ASKS

.

.

When someone asks "How are you?"

I can say "I have a cold" or "My back is stiff".

I can not say "I want something I can never have."

Or "I regret the decisions I have made."

Our longing and regret are hidden

As if our bodies are valid but not our emotions

As if our sorrow is a cause for shame

So I say to everyone, (silently in my thoughts)

"I am sorry you are sad, my friend.

Have regret, that your heart hurts.

I understand because I too have

The malady of humanness."

THE COST

.

.

When they fight about money

(And they fought all the time)

It was always about money

Every nickel and dime

.

.

You learn money's important

When you are a child

And they fight about money

Until they are wild

.

.

It's really scary

Fills you with fright

When they fight about money

Way into the night

.

.

When they fight about money

They turn loud and mean

You make yourself tiny

Try not to be seen.

.

.

More important than love

Being gentle and kind

Is the fight about money

Cause they fight all the time.

I GET GLOWING

As an active meditation

I describe each thing I'm doing

In my mind, silently to myself

But I precede it with "I get to ..."

For example

I might say "I get to ...listen to music."

Or

"I get to walk across the room."

This imbues everything

With a glow of gratitude.

ADDICTED TO PENANCE

He drank poison and nearly died

It was not enough

He burned his flesh and fried

It was not enough

He bled from deep inside

It was not enough

He took a near death ride

It was not enough

Now he must decide

When is enough enough?

DOWN BY THE RIVER

If the river was whiskey

And you were a diving duck

You'd dive in the river

And never would come up

While I stand on the shore

A co-dependent clown

Waiting to see

If you will swim or drown

DUST TO DUST

I have abandoned altars

Where once I worshipped devoutly

But now those gods are dead

Their shrines covered in dust

The candles unlit, the silver tarnished

The place where I once stood in reverence

Empty

My mind has flown like a dove

To find more fertile lands

SQUANDERED - STEP ONE

When should he give up?

Raise his white flag in surrender

When should he admit defeat?

His best efforts have utterly failed

His good intentions were all in vain

The silence when he asks for answers

Is deafening

The veil of self-deception has been lifted

From eyes full of pain and confusion

His substance squandered

Betrayed by a Judas kiss

Abandoned by the stranger in the mirror

He waits, for death or rebirth

Standing at the fork in the road
