I GET GLOWING

As an active meditation

I describe each thing I'm doing

In my mind, silently to myself

But I precede it with "I get to ..."

For example

I might say "I get to ...listen to music."

Or

"I get to walk across the room."

This imbues everything

With a glow of gratitude.

ADDICTED TO PENANCE

He drank poison and nearly died

It was not enough

He burned his flesh and fried

It was not enough

He bled from deep inside

It was not enough

He took a near death ride

It was not enough

Now he must decide

When is enough enough?

DOWN BY THE RIVER

If the river was whiskey

And you were a diving duck

You'd dive in the river

And never would come up

While I stand on the shore

A co-dependent clown

Waiting to see

If you will swim or drown

DUST TO DUST

I have abandoned altars

Where once I worshipped devoutly

But now those gods are dead

Their shrines covered in dust

The candles unlit, the silver tarnished

The place where I once stood in reverence

Empty

My mind has flown like a dove

To find more fertile lands

SQUANDERED - STEP ONE

When should he give up?

Raise his white flag in surrender

When should he admit defeat?

His best efforts have utterly failed

His good intentions were all in vain

The silence when he asks for answers

Is deafening

The veil of self-deception has been lifted

From eyes full of pain and confusion

His substance squandered

Betrayed by a Judas kiss

Abandoned by the stranger in the mirror

He waits, for death or rebirth

Standing at the fork in the road

TOTALLY TUBULAR

When I eat or drink I am reminded

That I am a tube

When I look at my veins I am reminded

That I am also filled with many tubes

I came into this world through a series

Of tubes

So perhaps it is only natural that my exit from this

Earthly plane will be through some kind of tube

With a light at the end of it.

IN THE VISIBLE

Show me the witches, the mages, the sages

The wild ones with herbs and spells on their pages

Who draw down the moon with the wisdom of ages

Come, show me the witches, the mages, the sages
