This is a song from an opera about Xerxes, the most powerful ruler in the world, as he looks at the shade from his beloved plane tree. It is a song of relaxation and contentment. It is a love song to a tree, to its welcoming shade.
Here is a translation of the lyrics:
Tender and beautiful fronds
of my beloved plane tree,
let Fate smile upon you.
May thunder, lightning, and storms
never disturb your dear peace,
nor may you by blowing winds be profaned.
Never was a shade
of any plant
dearer and more lovely,
or more sweet.
The opera was a commercial failure, lasting only five performances in London after its premiere.
But this song is immortal.
