Book review of the day -

"The Accursed” is the latest addition to Joyce Carol Oates’s boundless body of work, and it’s spectacular — a coalescence of history, horror and social satire that whirls around for almost 700 mesmerizing pages. Oates started the novel in 1984 but set it aside to steep in its own febrile juices for three decades. Now “The Accursed” arises in full bloom, boasting as much craft as witchcraft.

Ron Charles

(I'm currently reading it and I am amazed at how terrific it is.)

  2. About a third of the way. So far it has everything I want in a book including a weird historical twist that amuses me. She can make Woodrow Wilson come alive, no mean feat, lol!

    2. My "To Be Read" list is now so long I would have to become a vampire to get them all. I just keep plodding along, but my plans keep getting bigger. I give books 50 pages to grab me. The only exception to that is Stephen King.

    3. thank you for the smiles. I am so relieved to know that I am not the only one working with an impossible list! if you find a way to tackle it without having to turn, let me know! I would be interested in knowing other books you rec too.

      happy hump day to you

    4. Good Wednesday to you also. I just saw "Under the Skin" a very weird and well made movie with Scarlett Johansson. It reminded me of some of the trippier movies from the 80's like Liquid Sky. Do you like Sci-fi movies?

  3. ea~ I have had that on my list but no one wants to watch it with me *sniffs*. I do know what it is about per story. did you think it was well done? if not, then not sure I want to have that vision in my head. I do like sci fi when it is about unknowns, but not just to shock and make things horrific (ie gory).

I am more of a close encounters kinda peep than an alien one! I do not think I can ever get that stomach bursting image outta my head! nowadays, it is so simple but back then that moment was like...oh no, pea brain blown. I have seen many worse things but parasitic is definitely a trigger for me! *shudders as that can happen in real life...aliens not required*

oh how funny, liquid sky is such a throw back. so are you saying it will be like "soylent green is people" meets rocky horror?! *cracking self up*

  4. I know what you mean about certain triggers disqualifying a movie as a viewing choice. I posted two good reviews of the movie that might give you a better idea of what it contains. There is another movie, Interstellar, that might be more on target but I haven't seen it.

    Have a good day Z!
